  • No dedicated sales tax exemption: Alabama's pollution-control exemption targets industrial equipment, not rooftop solar. Assume standard state and local sales tax applies โ€” commonly 8 to 10 percent combined.
  • Partial โ€” local-option property tax exemption: State law lets, but doesn't require, counties and cities exempt the added value of a solar system from your assessment, for up to 10 years and renewable for up to 10 more, minus the school-funding portion.   • Leases and PPAs: Third-party-owned systems can still capture a separate federal business credit (Section 48E) through 2027, but it belongs to the leasing company, not you. Rate PAE: How Export Credit Works in Alabama

Alabama has no statewide net metering law requiring utilities to credit exported solar at retail rate. A homeowner who runs the AC, laundry, and an EV charger during peak sun hours will see a meaningfully better return than one who's away at work all day exporting most of their output at 4 cents a kWh. Ask every installer to model your actual daytime usage pattern, not a generic annual offset number — in Alabama that distinction is the difference between a reasonable payback and a genuinely long one.

How to Go Solar in Alabama
