Rhode Island Solar Incentives That Still Exist in 2026
Let's separate what's gone from what survived.

- Still here — sales tax exemption: Solar equipment and battery storage are exempt from Rhode Island's 7 percent sales and use tax, applied automatically at sale — no paperwork required.
- Still here — 20-year property tax exemption: Under R.I. Gen. Laws §44-3-21, the added assessed value from a residential solar system is excluded from your property tax assessment for 20 years, applied automatically by your municipal assessor in most towns. After 20 years, the town may begin counting the depreciated system value.

Virtual and Community Remote Net Metering also exist for shared arrays, mainly used by municipalities and commercial customers.
Renewable Energy Growth (REG) is the alternative: instead of credits on excess power only, REG pays a fixed rate — currently around 27 cents per kWh — on every kilowatt-hour your system produces, used or exported, under a 15-year contract. You cannot enroll in both. Because REG pays on total production, it tends to favor a shaded roof or a household often away during peak sun; net metering tends to favor homes that self-consume most of their solar. Ask your installer to model both against your real usage.
