Is Solar Worth It in Maine in 2026?

Maine Solar Incentives That Still Exist in 2026
Here's what's gone and what's actually left.
- Gone — the 30 percent federal credit: The federal Residential Clean Energy Credit ended for installations completed after December 31, 2025, with no phase-out. If a Maine installer's quote still assumes it, that's a sign the rest of their numbers are stale too.
- Never existed — a state tax credit: Maine has no state solar income-tax credit and no cash rebate program. Efficiency Maine's incentive dollars go toward heat pumps and weatherization, not solar PV.
- Does not exist, despite marketing claims — a sales-tax exemption: Some solar-marketing sites claim Maine exempts solar equipment from sales tax. Checking the statute directly (36 M.R.S. §1760) shows the old exemption was repealed in 1985, and the subsections some sites cite have no operative exemption text attached. Maine homeowners pay the standard 5.5 percent sales tax on solar equipment in 2026 — ask your installer to confirm this on your actual invoice.
- Still here — the property tax exemption: Under 36 M.R.S. §655(1)(U) and §656(1)(K), solar (and wind) equipment that generates power is fully exempt from local property tax, in effect since April 2020. None of that changes a simple homeowner rooftop deal — your 1:1 retail credit through CMP or Versant is unaffected, since the fight is really a commercial and community-solar story wearing a "net metering" headline.
Central Maine Power and Versant Power are the state's two major utilities, plus a handful of small co-ops and municipal utilities like Houlton Water Company. CMP covers southern and central Maine; Versant covers the old Bangor Hydro territory, Down East, and northern Maine. Both run NEB, but credit rates and 12-month rollover rules differ slightly — confirm the specifics with whichever utility serves your address.
Maine Winters, Snow Load, and Your Roof
Panels mounted at a proper pitch shed snow reasonably well once the surface warms slightly, and a working system keeps generating through a Maine winter — just at reduced output during storms and short days. The bigger risk isn't the panels; it's what's underneath them.
